[Tokyo] Haruko Mikami 10th Anniversary Memorial Exhibition "MIKAMI MEME 2025 | Haruko Mikami and the Meme of Creation"
Summary
The memorial exhibition "MIKAMI MEME 2025 | Haruko Mikami and the Meme of Creation" is currently being held at √K Contemporary in Tokyo, marking the 10th anniversary of the passing of artist Haruko Mikami (1961-2015), a pioneer in media art. Mikami first gained recognition in the mid-1980s for her works using iron junk, later expanding her themes to include the brain, computers, and the body/immune system, eventually shifting her expression to interactive art after her stay in New York in the early 1990s. She was active in the domestic and international media art scene for two decades and mentored many students at Tama Art University. This exhibition showcases works by artists who inherited cultural 'memes' through dialogue with Mikami and have since forged their own unique worlds. Participating artists include Norimizu A-mameya, Norimichi Hirakawa, Soichiro Mihara, Yuko Mohri, Fuyuki Yamakawa from Grand Guignol Mirai, and Yan Tsu. A performance of "Barricade," created by Norimizu A-mameya and Haruko Mikami in the 1980s, is scheduled for November 3rd.
