Works of avant-garde art group "Kyushu-ha" possibly burned; Collector painter's home completely destroyed, one body found
Summary
A fire completely destroyed a four-story residence in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, on October 18th, resulting in the discovery of one body. The residence belonged to Toshio Taniguchi (93), a painter and artist associated with the avant-garde art group "Kyushu-ha," which was active in the 1950s and 60s. Taniguchi reportedly housed works by the Kyushu-ha group in his home, and while his wife in her 70s sustained minor burns, Mr. Taniguchi remains unaccounted for. An independent curator noted that Kyushu-ha was significant for promoting avant-garde art from the provinces, and expressed concern that valuable items, such as photographs of exhibitions Taniguchi had collected, may have been lost in the blaze.
