Yoshio Nishihisamatsu Exhibition: Blessings of the Earth - Kyo-yasai 2025
Summary
This is an exhibition by the Japanese painter Yoshio Nishihisamatsu, titled "Blessings of the Earth - Kyo-yasai 2025," taking place at Gallery HILLGATE from November 25 to November 30, 2025. Nishihisamatsu's interest in the shape, color, and regionality of vegetables and fruits was sparked by seeing them displayed in street stalls during a trip to Europe. He has created works based on root vegetables like potatoes and carrots, noting the unique shapes formed by their growth influenced by soil conditions and nature. Moving beyond landscapes like Ine's boat houses, he now composes pieces using vegetables and fruits in themes such as "Sutra Characters and Vegetables," "Buddhist Images and Vegetables," and "Mandala and Vegetables," often seeking out uniquely shaped vegetables at local markets. The exhibition celebrates the diverse vegetables and fruits cultivated across Japan, which are considered blessings of their respective lands. Nishihisamatsu is a distinguished artist, a graduate of Kyoto City University of Arts, and currently holds positions including Vice Chairman of the Sōgakai.
