Curatorial Studies 16: Yu Araki Reorienting —With Artists Who Crossed the Sea 100 Years Ago— @ The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto
Summary
The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto is holding the 16th iteration of its research presentation program, "Curatorial Studies," featuring the exhibition "Reorienting —With Artists Who Crossed the Sea 100 Years Ago—" by artist and film director Yu Araki. Araki constructs video installations by exploring the space between historical events and fantasy through methods of reproduction and reenactment. The exhibition showcases four of Araki's works, including one new video filmed in Portugal, alongside over 20 other pieces. These include 14 works from the museum's collection by "Japanese immigrant artists" such as Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Eitaro Ishigaki, and Hideo Noda, as well as modernist photographs by Alfred Stieglitz and Dorothea Lange. The exhibition aims to juxtapose Araki's contemporary gaze on crossing boundaries with the works of these past artists who moved across borders, exploring the relationship between movement, transgression, and expression.
