Akiko Tabata Exhibition @ Niigata Prefectural Museum of Art, Bandaijima
Summary
The Niigata Prefectural Museum of Art, Bandaijima will hold a major retrospective exhibition for the painter and poet Akiko Tabata (1940-1969), who held only one solo exhibition before passing away at the age of 28. The exhibition runs from November 22, 2025, to January 12, 2026. Tabata began writing poetry in junior high school and studied painting at Musashino Art University, but died of stomach cancer while preparing for her second solo show. This comprehensive exhibition, organized by the museum that was an early collector of her work, will feature over 200 sketches and poems, alongside all of her representative works—fewer than ten white oil paintings—and collages, exploring her ephemeral world of imagery. The exhibition is structured in four parts, tracing her background, the development of her delicate line drawings called "oboro-sen" (hazy lines) through sketches and manuscripts, the complete display of her white oil painting series, and finally, the path her work has taken since her death. Various related events, including talks and workshops, are scheduled during the exhibition period.
