A New Experience Where Noh Theater and Contemporary Art Intersect: The "Whispers of Mononoke" Exhibition to be Held at Zuiun-an in Kyoto
Summary
The exhibition "Whispers of Mononoke," which attempts to fuse Noh theater and contemporary art, will run from November 1st to 30th at Zuiun-an in Kyoto. The exhibition reinterprets elements of Noh, a traditional performing art, through contemporary artistic thought and methods, unfolding as a sound installation utilizing the space of a century-old traditional house, centered around 'Soyo' (a solo recitation without music or dance). The theme is the yokai 'Nue' (chimera), inviting the audience on a journey of 'Nue hunting' while intertwining past and present, reality and fiction. The core concept is to listen closely to the voices and presence of 'yokai' and 'mononoke' that still exist in our familiar world but have become difficult for modern people, whose senses have dulled due to modernization, to perceive. Drawing clues from the Noh play 'Nue,' which is based on the Tale of the Heike, the exhibition develops a narrative where visitors themselves trace the traces of Nue as 'I = You.'
