35th Bunkyo Contemporary Art Salon = Yutaka Toyota Prize Established
Summary
The Brazilian Japanese Cultural and Welfare Association (Bunkyo) is holding its 35th Contemporary Art Salon from October 26th to November 9th, commemorating its 70th anniversary and the 130th anniversary of Japan-Brazil diplomatic relations. Out of 907 submissions, 80 artists were selected, with four Japanese-Brazilian artists winning awards, demonstrating the strong presence of Japanese art in contemporary Brazilian art. This year, the judging emphasized independence and diversity, handled by experts primarily of non-Japanese descent. Notably, the "Yutaka Toyota Prize" was newly established as a special award, named after renowned environmental artist Yutaka Toyota. Toyota, serving as an invited juror, awarded this prize to the non-Japanese Brazilian artist Julio Primeiro, symbolizing cultural fusion and mutual understanding. The first prize went to Mauro Kiosi Yamaguti. Toyota serves as the master sponsor for the event.
