Yasumasa Morimura Exhibition Reflecting on the Meiji to Showa Eras at the Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki
Summary
The Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, is hosting the exhibition "Yasumasa Morimura 'Nostalgia, Where to?' - Encountering Art, Literature, and Music." This exhibition focuses on the richness of the period when art, literature, and music were closely intertwined during Japan's modernization in the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. Morimura conceived this display to create a new encounter between these three elements at the historic museum, which was founded in 1930 by industrialist Magosaburo Ohara. Chapter 1, "Gaze Echoes in Words (Art x Literature)," features 21 works selected by Morimura from the museum's collection, paired with modern and contemporary poetry and verse; for instance, Shunsuke Matsumoto's painting "City" is matched with Shuntaro Tanikawa's poem "Morning Relay." Visitors can view video readings of the poetry by Morimura via QR codes next to the artworks.
