Taipei Biennial 2025
Summary
The 14th Taipei Biennial 2025, directed by Sam Birdwill and Til Felras, will open at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum on November 1, 2025, under the theme "Whispers on the Horizon." This theme explores the concept of "longing" (思慕) in relation to Taiwan's complex history of colonial rule, identity struggles, and political changes. The exhibition draws inspiration from three objects symbolizing Taiwan's history of longing: the "puppet" from Hou Hsiao-hsien's film about puppeteer Li Tian-lu, the "diary" from Chen Ying-chen's short story, and the "bicycle" from Wu Ming-Yi's novel. Works by early 20th-century Taiwanese painters like Chen Cheng-Po and crafts from the National Palace Museum also serve as conceptual sources. The biennial features 54 artists from 35 cities, with nearly half born after 1984, and will debut 33 commissioned works, including pieces by Korakrit Arunanondchai and Zih-Yan Ciou.
