30th Anniversary of Manga Artist Fumiyo Kouno Exhibition: Birds Fly, Rabbits Hop, Flowers Sway, Running, Falling, A Long Road
Summary
This exhibition commemorates the 30th anniversary of the career of Fumiyo Kouno, a leading Japanese manga artist, showcasing her journey through over 500 original manga drawings, sketches, and notes, ranging from pre-debut illustrations to her latest works. Held at the Kumamoto City Museum of Contemporary Art, the event highlights the charm of Kouno's diverse art, unique to a region promoting itself as a "Manga Prefecture." Kouno works without assistants, lending her original drawings the appeal of "single pieces of art," characterized by a consistent, endearing style coupled with continuous experimentation in each work. A variety of related events are scheduled, including an opening talk with Kouno and the exhibition supervisor, a live painting session, a one-day manga workshop focusing on a local folk song, a wall-doodling workshop, a fan letter corner, and guided gallery tours. Additionally, related projects include a free screening series of films selected by Kouno and an exhibition of works chosen by her from the museum's collection.
