Toward a Mausoleum of Perception—Seiko Mikami's Interactive Installations @ NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC]
Summary
The NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC] is holding the exhibition "Toward a Mausoleum of Perception—Seiko Mikami's Interactive Installations," featuring multiple interactive installations by the artist Seiko Mikami (1961–2015), who passed away in 2015. Mikami, known for her large-scale installations since 1984 exploring themes of information society and the body, began creating interactive works centered on perception interfaces in the mid-1990s, utilizing eye-tracking, auditory/somatic sounds, touch, and gravity. Because Mikami actively updated her works with the latest technology, many of her complex interactive pieces are difficult to remount. However, institutions like YCAM, in collaboration with former production staff, have undertaken restoration and partial recreation efforts posthumously. This exhibition will display these interactive works, alongside documentation of their evolution, ongoing restoration and archiving initiatives, and examples of how archive data is being utilized. Talk events with artists and researchers close to Mikami are also planned.
