Hiroshi Sugito Exhibition: flyleaf and liner @ Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art
Summary
The Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art is holding the solo exhibition "flyleaf and liner" by Hiroshi Sugito, a leading contemporary Japanese painter known for his color-field compositions that navigate between abstraction and figuration. Running from December 5, 2025, to May 17, 2026, the exhibition focuses on the concept of "margins" or "edges" ("eri" and "heri"), such as the paper backing a canvas, the flyleaf of a book, or the liner of clothing. Sugito reconfigures everyday objects and textures into art, incorporating elements like frames, pedestals, and the exhibition space itself. The show will feature small works combining familiar materials like envelope scraps, cardboard, and ceramics, alongside works from the 1990s that Sugito has revised. Graphic designer Kazunari Hattori participates as a collaborator. Additionally, the concurrent collection exhibition will feature a special display of a 2004 collaborative work between Sugito and Hirosaki native Yoshitomo Nara.
