Janet Cardiff: The Forty Part Motet
Summary
The Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA) will exhibit Janet Cardiff's renowned sound installation, "The Forty Part Motet" (2001), from December 13, 2025, to February 15, 2026. This work is based on Thomas Tallis's motet and features 40 individual speakers, each playing a separate voice part from a 59-person choir, creating an immersive, sculptural experience of sound within the space. This exhibition marks the conclusion of the work's domestic tour in Japan, following stops at Hara Museum ARC, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and The Museum of Modern Art, Nagasaki. The installation will utilize MIMOCA's spacious Exhibition Room C, which features a 7-meter ceiling height, allowing visitors to fully experience the dialogue between Cardiff's sonic sculpture and the architecture designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. The exhibition runs concurrently with the special exhibition "Genichiro Inokuma: Lining Up Dreams."
