MAM Project 034: Sonia Boyce @ Mori Art Museum
Summary
The Mori Art Museum is holding the 34th iteration of its MAM Project series, featuring the first solo exhibition in Japan by the British artist Sonia Boyce, running from December 3, 2025, to March 29, 2026. Boyce, born in London, explores diaspora experiences and collaborative creation across various media, notably winning the Golden Lion at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022. The exhibition will feature the largest installation from her ongoing series, *Devotional*, specifically *Devotional Wallpaper and Placards* (2008–2020). This work honors overlooked Black female performers through a 'living archive' built from community collaboration, featuring wallpaper printed with names and placards displaying archival materials. The installation aims to unearth invisible cultures and positions the viewer as a participant in updating this archive. A related talk session with Adjunct Curator Victor Wang will delve into Boyce's practice concerning collaboration, copyright, and cultural identity.
