"Expressing the 'Obvious Things'" - Sadaharu Horio, a Gutai Member Who Led the Contemporary Art Scene Since the 1970s, Exhibition in Yamatokoriyama, Nara (Sankei Shimbun)
Summary
An exhibition featuring the late Sadaharu Horio (1939–2018), a prominent contemporary artist and member of the avant-garde Gutai Art Association (disbanded in 1972), is currently being held at Kita Gallery in Yamatokoriyama City, Nara Prefecture. Horio, who helped lead the contemporary art scene since the 1970s, explored the meaning of human existence through art under the concept of "obvious things." His diverse activities included not only painting but also unique performance works, such as "Color Painting," where he continuously applied a single new color to objects over decades, and "Water Painting," where he drew on roads using water leaking from bags. The current exhibition at Kita Gallery, which hosted Horio annually since 2009, features about 10 pieces, including parts of his notable "Sen GO Sen Ten Monogatari" performance and large paintings and sculptures, aiming to convey the excitement of his creative process. The exhibition is free and runs until December 14th.
