Fusuma Paintings from Nakadomari Town, Aomori Prefecture, to be Exhibited at the British Museum Japanese Art Collection Exhibition in 2026! | NHK Aomori
Summary
It has been decided that fusuma paintings owned by the former Miyakoshi family residence in Nakadomari Town, Aomori Prefecture, will be exhibited at the special exhibition "British Museum Japanese Art Collection: A Riot of Flowers and Birds—Edo Painting Across the Sea," commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in 2026 in Tokyo and Osaka. These paintings have been confirmed to be part of a series with fusuma paintings held by the British Museum in London and the Seattle Art Museum in the US, marking a miraculous reunion after approximately 150 years of separation across three countries. The Miyakoshi family's works, such as the "Spring Landscape Flower and Bird Screen" and "Famous Views and Customs (Seiken-ji Temple and Miho no Matsubara) Screen," share continuity in depiction and elaborate decorative techniques with the British Museum's "Autumn and Winter Flower and Bird Screen" and the Seattle Art Museum's "Four Arts of the Scholar Screen." These works date from the late Momoyama to early Edo periods and have a remarkable history of being separated internationally.
