【Kyoto Winter Art 2025】Two Special Exhibitions Where You Can Enjoy Splendid Japanese Art, Featuring "Folding Screens" and "Beauty Pictures"
Summary
This winter in Kyoto, two museums are hosting special exhibitions where visitors can appreciate splendid Japanese art focusing on folding screens and "Bijinga" (pictures of beautiful women). The first is the Shokokuji Shokotenkaku Museum's exhibition, "Folding Screens: Golden Furnishings," showcasing a collection of folding screens that have adorned the prestigious space of Shokokuji Temple, founded by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. This exhibition runs until March 8, 2026, in two parts, featuring screens used in memorial services, those depicting Chinese anecdotes, and nature scenes.
The second is a joint exhibition by the Fukuda Museum and the Saga Arashiyama Museum of Art, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Uemura Shoen. The Fukuda Museum's "Uemura Shoen and the Trajectory of Bijinga" displays 28 of Shoen's works, tracing the path of modern "Bijinga" through pieces by Kaburaki Kiyokata and his disciple Monii Kikusui. Meanwhile, the Saga Arashiyama Museum of Art's "Trajectory of Ukiyo-e and Bijinga" introduces Edo period hand-painted Ukiyo-e beauties and works depicting women on stage or in entertainment quarters, allowing visitors to enjoy the atmosphere of that time.
