Turner Prize 2025
Summary
On December 9, 2025, the award ceremony for the Turner Prize, one of the world's leading contemporary art awards, was held at the Grammar School in Bradford, celebrating the 250th anniversary of J.M.W. Turner's birth. Nnena Kalu, an artist based in London who creates work while affiliated with Action Space, an organization supporting artists with learning disabilities, was selected as the winner, receiving prize money of £25,000.
Kalu's work is characterized by colorful sculptural installations resembling cocoons, made from various materials like paper and fabric, and abstract drawings based on repetitive actions. The jury highly praised how her expressive gestures were vividly translated into abstract sculptures and drawings, commending the power of her presence, unique expression, scale, composition, and use of color.
The exhibition featuring the four finalists—Nnena Kalu, Rene Matic, Mohammad Sami, and Zadie Xa—will continue until February 22 of the following year at the Cartwright Hall Art Gallery. Furthermore, the next Turner Prize will be hosted by Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) in Middlesbrough, and an exhibition titled "Tate Britain – YBA & BEYOND: British Art of the 90s that Changed the World" is scheduled to open in Tokyo in February and Kyoto in June, featuring works by numerous past winners and shortlisted artists of the prize.
