Learning Japanese Art through "Bijinga" - Lecture Held Inviting Mr. Yoshie Itani -
Summary
Saitama University hosted a lecture on "Bijinga" (pictures of beautiful women) as part of its "Introduction to Japanese Culture" course, designed for both Japanese and international students. The guest lecturer was Yoshie Itani, a Specially Appointed Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts. Students analyzed 28 Bijinga spanning from the Nara period to contemporary works, learning how this genre evolved over time. Following the viewing, student groups presented themes based on their selection of four paintings, such as "International Lassanai Exhibition" and "Looking Away Beauties." Professor Itani encouraged students to value their own sensibilities when engaging with art. The session provided a valuable opportunity to deeply understand historical and cultural changes through the lens of Japanese art.
