The National Center for Art Research (NCAR) and Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions (AWARE) announced the launch of the 2026 "NCAR × AWARE Women Artists Research Fellowship" on December 12, 2025, aimed at promoting research on women artists in Japan. The fellowship targets researchers and curators residing or staying in Japan, offering up to €5,000 (approx. ¥850,000) per research project. The research must focus on women artists (or non-binary artists whose gender identity is not limited to the binary) active in the visual arts with ties to Japan. A maximum of two projects will be selected annually for a fellowship period of generally one year. The application period runs from December 12, 2025, to January 31, 2026, with the research period scheduled from April 2026 to March 2027. The resulting research papers will be published on the official websites of both NCAR and AWARE.
