Yokohama Museum of Art Renewal Opening Commemorative Exhibition "Because We Are Always Next to Each Other: 80 Years of Art in Japan and Korea" @ Yokohama Museum of Art
Summary
The Yokohama Museum of Art is hosting the joint exhibition "Because We Are Always Next to Each Other: 80 Years of Art in Japan and Korea" from December 6, 2025, to March 22, 2026, to commemorate its renovation. Co-organized with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, the exhibition marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of Japan-Korea relations and will travel to the MMCA Gwacheon in May 2026. The show features approximately 160 works by over 50 artists from both countries, including works being shown in Japan for the first time and new commissions. The exhibition is divided into five chapters: exploring the perspectives of Zainichi Koreans between 1945 and 1965; focusing on video artist Nam June Paik and his connection to the Japanese art world; tracing mutual stimulation in the art scenes after normalization; depicting the emergence of a new generation using new media; and examining practices related to South Korea's democratization movement and the theme of "living together.". Related events, including screenings and artist talks featuring artists like Fumio Momose, Im Heung-soon, and Koki Tanaka, are also scheduled.
