Ebosi Yuasa | Deikai
Summary
Gallery Koyanagi will host Ebosi Yuasa's first solo exhibition, "Deikai," from December 20, 2025, to March 7, 2026. Yuasa has an unusual background, having decided to become a painter after his finance company failed. Influenced by Surrealism through figures like Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, he positions himself as the fictional painter "Yuasa Eboshi" (1924-1987), creating works in that style. Eboshi is set as an artist belonging to the generation that lived through the war, though he did not serve due to a herniated disc. The exhibition will display ten paintings attributed to Eboshi concerning "war," including three previously shown at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and seven new works created for this show. The piece *The Boy* depicts a youth whose vacant expression hints at the fate awaiting young men in special attack uniforms, symbolizing the pain and heavy silence of those who lived through the post-war period. The exhibition title, "Deikai," derives from the clay doll and murky sea in *The Boy*, symbolizing the turbulent current of the era witnessed by those who did not go to war and the memories salvaged from it. The exhibition will also feature works like *Pseudo Marshal* and *Health Above All*, satirizing post-war Japanese culture. A reception with the artist will be held on the opening day, and related events are planned. Concurrently, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo will feature Yuasa Eboshi's works in its 30th Anniversary MOT Collection exhibition.
