"Sekai no Kotowari—Art of Our Time" (The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto) Opening Report: What Expressions Since the 1990s Show
Summary
Following an exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo, "Sekai no Kotowari—Art of Our Time #WhereDoWeStand? : Art in Our Time," which covers art trends from the 1990s to the present, has opened at The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. Curator Chinatsu Makiguchi stated that the title, written in Katakana as "Sekai no Kotowari," implies a place where visitors can encounter works that offer hints for contemplating important matters in an unstable society, suggesting a place to touch upon "the truth of the world." The exhibition features about 70 works by 20 selected artists, focusing on the Kansai art scene, based on the museum's collection and categorized by keywords such as "daily life," "identity," "body," "history," and "globalized society." Approximately 40 of these works are part of the museum's collection, showcasing the results of its contemporary art acquisitions since the 2020s. The venue is structured to allow visitors to move from one "island" to the next, attempting to map out a narrative connecting the works like a "sea chart."
