Books and Art: Integrated and Open, "Circulation" that Invites Surprise and Discovery... Special Edition
Summary
The Taichung Green Museum Library, a complex cultural facility integrating a public library and art museum, has opened in Taichung, Taiwan. Designed by the Japanese architectural unit SANA A in collaboration with local Taiwanese architects, the facility is composed of eight independent cubic structures set within a green park. SANA A's Kazuyo Sejima stated her intention was for the building to feel like an extension of the park, ensuring a continuous connection between the interior and exterior. The structure utilizes glass and aluminum mesh walls to maximize transparency. While the library and museum operate separately, they feature 'fusion spaces' where collections can be searched together. A key focus is 'circulation' designed to encourage visitor surprise and discovery through dynamic pathways, including diagonal stairs and bridges connecting the buildings. Library Director Tseng Hui-chun highlighted the potential for cross-disciplinary collaboration, while Museum Director Lai Yi-Hsin aims for the museum to become an artistic hub for Central Taiwan and Asia, noting that the library's presence can attract visitors less inclined toward traditional art venues.
