Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art "Chapter 3" | With the Streets of Paris. Towards a New Horizon for Art
Summary
The Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, which has long supported contemporary art, relocated to 2 Place du Palais-Royal in the heart of Paris and reopened on October 25, 2025. The new space, renovated by architect Jean Nouvel, is approximately five times larger than the previous location and features a grand, multi-story interior with five exhibition zones equipped with movable platforms that can adjust height in 11 stages, allowing the architecture to dynamically transform according to the artwork. This embodies the Foundation's philosophy of not separating the city and art. The opening exhibition, titled "Exposition Générale," showcases about 600 selected works from its collection, symbolizing the Foundation's commitment to being "transversal," bridging genres like design, music, architecture, and science. Managing Director Chris Delcon emphasized that the Foundation has driven contemporary art in Paris for 40 years by providing artists with a "blank slate" for free creation and influencing social awareness and cultural policy. The new facility also includes the "Manufacture," a center for education and dialogue, aiming to be a "device for seeing" that encourages deeper engagement with art beyond mere viewing, offering workshops and events.
