Historic US Art College Announces Closure; Massive Support from NVIDIA Co-founder's Foundation Fails to Save It
Summary
The California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco, the city's only art college with over a century of history, has announced its closure in 2027. CCA's president stated that the main factors leading to the closure were declining enrollment and mounting structural deficits, which could not be overcome despite receiving a significant donation of $22.5 million (approximately 3.25 billion JPY at the time) last year from the foundation of NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. Following the closure, the campus will be sold to Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, where a new Vanderbilt CCA Institute will be established to preserve CCA's educational philosophy and archives. Provisions are being made for current students, including pathways for underclassmen to transfer to other accredited institutions to complete their degrees. This closure follows a trend of contraction in US art education, exemplified by the recent closure of the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI).
