Korea Artist Prize 2025
Summary
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), in collaboration with the SBS Foundation, announced Kim YoungEun as the winner of the prestigious Korea Artist Prize 2025. Kim YoungEun (born 1980) is recognized for her interdisciplinary, sound-centered practice rooted in acoustic ethnography, focusing on how sound and listening are politically constructed. An exhibition featuring her work alongside that of fellow finalists—Kim Jipyeong, Unmake Lab, and Im Youngju—is currently being held at the MMCA Seoul until February 2nd. Kim's winning presentation explored the politics of listening through the experiences of diaspora communities, including Koryo-saram and Korean immigrants in Los Angeles, and highlighted overlooked female voices in immigrant history. Judges praised her ability to connect social themes with individual experiences. Established in 2012, the prize supports artists pursuing new visions in Korean contemporary art, and since 2023, it has expanded eligibility to include artists with roots in the Korean Peninsula regardless of nationality.
