Cats, Warrior Prints, and Beauties! The "Ukiyo-e Super Creator Utagawa Kuniyoshi Exhibition" to be Held at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art
Summary
The "Ukiyo-e Super Creator Utagawa Kuniyoshi Exhibition," which surveys the diverse artistic achievements of the late Edo period ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, will take place at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art from July 18th to September 23rd. Known as a "master of eccentric ideas," Kuniyoshi is famous for his warrior prints (musha-e) and humorous cat pictures (giga), but the exhibition will highlight his talent across various genres, including beautiful women prints (bijinga), actor prints, and innovative landscapes incorporating Western techniques. Approximately 200 masterpieces, divided into six categories, will be displayed, including famous works like "Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre" (Sōma no Furudairi). The exhibition aims to re-evaluate Kuniyoshi as a "super creator" and illuminate the sensibilities of Edo-period people through the context of his works.
