Focusing on the Place Where Donald Judd's Thought Crystallized: "Judd | Marfa Exhibition" to be Held at Watari-um Museum of Contemporary Art
Summary
The exhibition "Judd | Marfa Exhibition," held at the Watari-um Museum of Contemporary Art from February 15 to June 7, 2026, re-examines the practice of 20th-century artist Donald Judd through the relationship between his creations and space. After moving from New York to Marfa, Texas, in the 1970s, Judd established The Chinati Foundation to permanently install his own works and those of his contemporaries within existing structures, reflecting his belief that art should not be a temporary performance. The exhibition will feature early paintings, three-dimensional works from the 1960s to the 90s, and materials like drawings and blueprints that illustrate his concept of "space" in Marfa, emphasizing the harmony between art, architecture, and land. It will also look back at his relationship with Japan, referencing his first visit and exhibition in 1978. A symposium titled "Thinking about JUDD" will also take place on the opening day to explore Judd's multifaceted influence.
