"Kamakura Museum of Modern Art" and Showa Art
Summary
The Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art opened in 1951 in the precincts of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura City. The building, designed by Kenzo Tange, was affectionately known as "Kamakura Museum of Modern Art (Kamakin)" and was designated an Important Cultural Property by the national government in 2020. To commemorate the centenary of the Showa era, this exhibition displays materials related to this postwar architectural landmark alongside 22 works of oil painting and sculpture from the Showa period that were introduced at the museum. The museum began its activities with almost no collection, building its collection through connections with artists via exhibitions. This exhibition gathers masterpieces of Showa art representing the collection, allowing visitors to look back on the era walked alongside the artists. The exhibition will be held from June 13, 2026, to August 30, 2026.
