National Museum Collection Dialogue: Kojiro Matsutaka × Tokutaro Yamamura – The Passion for Collecting: Bringing Rodin to Japan, Taking Gutai to the World
Summary
The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art will host a special exhibition titled "National Museum Collection Dialogue: Kojiro Matsutaka × Tokutaro Yamamura – The Passion for Collecting: Bringing Rodin to Japan, Taking Gutai to the World" from October 10 to December 27, 2026. This exhibition traces the artistic legacies of two collectors from Hyogo prefecture: Kojiro Matsutaka, who built a major European art collection to introduce Western art to Japan, and Tokutaro Yamamura, who collected post-war Japanese avant-garde art, particularly the Gutai Art Association, for the world. It marks the first time works from the Matsutaka Collection (including Rodin's "The Thinker" from the National Museum of Western Art) and the Yamamura Collection have been shown together. A total of 67 masterpieces will be displayed, including pieces by Rodin, Monet, Gauguin, Miró, and Ernst. Related events such as a symposium and lectures will also be held.
