Shigeru Hasegawa's First Major Museum Solo Exhibition "Shigeru Hasegawa: Pain Tengu" Held at Toyota Municipal Museum of Art. From Unpublished Works from His German Study Period to a Major Work About 30 Years in the Making
Summary
Toyota Municipal Museum of Art will present "Shigeru Hasegawa: Pain Tengu," a solo exhibition by painter Shigeru Hasegawa, from October 24, 2025, to January 24, 2027. This is Hasegawa's first major solo exhibition at a museum and will feature about 120 works, ranging from early pieces, including unpublished works, to new works created for this exhibition. Hasegawa was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1963. After completing his graduate studies at Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, he went to Germany in 1989 and studied under Jan Dibbets at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In 1992, he moved to the Netherlands, where he had a residency at De Ateliers in Amsterdam and continued to produce work there until 1996. His works repeatedly feature classic still-life motifs such as eggplants, cucumbers, bananas, and fish, while elements derived from Western painting, such as drapery and chair legs, become components that construct the picture as mere "forms" devoid of meaning. This attempt to constantly paint different pictures with limited elements also experienced a dead end, and he suspended exhibitions in 2013. However, he continued to produce work during that time, and since resuming exhibitions with a solo show in 2019, he has been actively presenting new works. This exhibition will introduce Hasegawa's long career by interweaving old and new works, revealing the thorough will and light development that runs through them. It will also shed light on Hasegawa's gaze, dedicated to looking at works from all times and places, and the unique sensibility nurtured in his daily life since childhood, and will include a room composed of the museum's collection and Hasegawa's own collected items.
