Tosa Naoko Exhibition "Born from Generation" Held at Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, Light Hall. Tracing Approximately 40 Years of Exploration into "Generation"
Summary
The solo exhibition "Born from Generation" by contemporary artist Naoko Tosa will be held at the Light Hall of the main building of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art from November 7 to 22. Tosa, a specially appointed professor at Kyoto University's Disaster Prevention Research Institute, is based in Kyoto and New York. She made her international debut in 1986 at MoMA's "NEW VIDEO JAPAN". After earning a doctorate in engineering from the University of Tokyo and serving as an MIT Artist Fellow, she has been engaged in education and research at Kyoto University since 2005. She advocates "Cultural Computing," which expresses cultural patterns using modern technology, and explores natural forms created by sound, vibration, fluid, and gravity. Her works are held in collections such as MoMA, the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art, and Kennin-ji Temple. The exhibition surveys her approximately 40-year exploration of "generation," featuring works from her early video art pieces such as "An Expression" (1985), held at MoMA, and "ECSTASY" (1986), to works from 2010–25 including "Sound of Ikebana," "Genesis," and "Utsurohi," culminating in the new work "Tosa Rimpa: Kiin Seidō," all displayed across four chapters. It connects the generative knowledge accumulated in Japanese culture with modern technology and reconsiders the boundaries between painting, video, and technology through the question of whether Japanese painting can be established without a brush. On weekends during the exhibition, talk programs with Tosa and guests will be held.
