Hiroshi Kagakui World Exhibition Opens November 17 at Toyohashi City Museum of Art and History
Summary
The exhibition "The World of Hiroshi Kagakui: A Picture Book Author Who Brought Smiles to Children Across Japan" opens November 17 at the Toyohashi City Museum of Art and History and runs through November 15. It is the first large-scale retrospective of Hiroshi Kagakui (1955–2009), known for the "Darumasan" series, which has over 10 million copies in circulation, and is touring nationwide. On the 16th, a preview and opening ceremony were held for invited guests. Mayor Hisato Nagasaka noted that the "Darumasan" series could become one of Japan's most-read works in the coming decades and encouraged many children to enjoy the art without worrying about museum silence. The exhibition features about 200 original illustrations from all 16 picture books, including "Darumasan ga" and "Gaman no Cake," plus idea notebooks, sketches, unfinished roughs for a new "Darumasan" book, and a venue-exclusive video attraction. Workshops and reading events are planned during the run. Admission is 1,200 yen for adults and university students, 600 yen for elementary, junior high, and high school students.
