Summary
Sen-oku Hakuko Kan (24 Shimomiyanomae-cho, Shishigatani, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto) will host the special exhibition "100th Anniversary of the Death: Sumitomo Harusui – Fortunate Sumitomo Modern Art Collection" from October 31 to December 20, 2026. The exhibition introduces the modern art collection assembled by Sumitomo Harusui (1864–1926), the 15th head of the Sumitomo family, from the mid-Meiji to the Taisho period. It spans a wide range of fields, including Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and painting, Western painting, modern ceramics, tea utensils, and Noh masks and costumes. The exhibition is structured in three chapters: "Awakening of Noblesse Oblige," "Practice of Philanthropy," and "What Runs Through 'The Family' and 'The Self.'" It traces Harusui's career and acquisition history chronologically, reexamining his aesthetic sense and the background of the collection's formation. Masterpieces by Fujishima Takeji, Claude Monet, Itaya Hazan, and others are displayed, along with episodes illustrating Harusui's interactions with contemporary artists. Opening hours are 10:00–17:00 (last admission 16:30), closed Mondays and November 24. Admission is 1,200 yen for adults, 800 yen for students, and free for those 18 and under.
