Daimaru Matsuzakaya Opens New Art Space in Arashiyama, Kyoto; Inaugural Exhibition by Tatsuo Miyajima, Design by Kentaro Ishida
Summary
Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Store has announced that it will open a new art space called "Arashiyama Collective" in Arashiyama, Kyoto, in April 2027. The facility's concept is "co-creation, inheritance, and cross-border," aiming to be a place where contemporary art intersects with Arashiyama's history and culture and Japanese traditional aesthetics. Through collaboration with artists, galleries, and the local community, it seeks to create new cultural value across different fields including art, luxury, fashion, design, and traditional crafts. The two-story wooden building has a total floor area of approximately 215 square meters; the first floor will operate as an open gallery and the second floor as an invitation/referral-only space. The architectural design is by KIAS (Kentaro Ishida Architects Studio), led by architect Kentaro Ishida, who previously worked at the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron and was involved in projects such as the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The opening exhibition will be a solo show by contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for works using digital numbers that explore the universal themes of "time" and "life." Daimaru Matsuzakaya has been strengthening its art business in recent years, and this facility will further develop those efforts.
