"Tokyo University of the Arts and Chinese International Students: From Hu Gentian to the Present" Exhibition to Be Held at the Tokyo University of the Arts University Art Museum Exhibition Hall
Summary
The exhibition "Tokyo University of the Arts and Chinese International Students: From Hu Gentian to the Present" will be held at the Exhibition Hall of the University Art Museum at Tokyo University of the Arts in Ueno, Tokyo, from November 21 to December 5. It is the third installment of the "Tokyo University of the Arts and Chinese International Students" project, following a 2024 exhibition and a 2025 concert, and centers on the museum's self-portrait by Hu Gentian. Hu was born in Kaiping, Guangdong Province, China, and studied Western painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) after coming to Japan in 1915. Through his graduation work "Self-Portrait" and related student-era materials, the exhibition traces his stay and studies in Japan, and also introduces how he helped establish the Guangzhou Municipal School of Fine Arts after returning home, playing a key role in laying the foundation of modern art education in southern China. A large-screen digital archive visualizes information on Chinese students who studied at the school, including enrollment years, places of origin, majors, and relationships, while current Chinese students, graduates, and artists who studied there in the 1990s participate with their own works, conveying exchanges continuing from past to present. An international symposium will also be held on November 22 on the museum's first floor, exploring the role Tokyo University of the Arts has played in art education and cultural exchange between Japan and China and across East Asia.
