Why Is the Tokyo National Museum Accelerating MOU Signings with Overseas Institutions? Director Masayuki Fujiwara Speaks on the Aim at the Signing Ceremony with the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco
Summary
On October 19, the Tokyo National Museum and the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for international exchange aimed at strengthening cooperation across a wide range of fields, including academic research and personnel exchange. The signing ceremony, held at the Tokyo National Museum's Heiseikan, was attended by the museum's director, Masayuki Fujiwara, and the library's director, Samira El Malizi, who signed the agreement. The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Morocco, and the Tokyo National Museum also signed an MOU with the National Museum Foundation of Morocco in June of this year, actively promoting cultural exchange between the two countries. At the ceremony, Director El Malizi emphasized that although the two countries are geographically far apart, they share a common responsibility to preserve cultural heritage and pass it on to the next generation, and stated that the agreement has significance beyond the framework of an inter-institutional arrangement. She positioned cultural heritage as a living heritage and expressed hope that it would strengthen mutual understanding and friendly relations.
