Hashirimizu Water Source 2026 @ Former Hashirimizu Elementary School
Summary
BankART1929 will hold "Hashirimizu Water Source 2026," a four-day art project exploring water and land, from October 31 to November 3, 2026, at the former Hashirimizu Elementary School in Yokosuka, Kanagawa. Since 2004, BankART1929 has spent 20 years based in Yokohama, utilizing historic buildings and idle spaces to explore new relationships between cities and people, and people and places through art. The project focuses on Hashirimizu, an area blessed with abundant spring water that retains the memory of the original topography of the Miura Peninsula, where sea and mountains connect, within the increasingly urbanized Tokyo Bay area; its place name appears in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. The venue, the former Hashirimizu Elementary School, opened in 1873 and was cherished as "the elementary school closest to the sea," but was merged into Yokosuka City Mabori Elementary School in March 2025, ending its 151-year history. BankART1929 interprets the "water source" of the actual Hashirimizu Water Source, from which the title derives, as a place where invisible cycles and accumulations overlap and emerge as new flows. The exhibition is linked with the community event "Through the Water 2026 Autumn" and, through exhibitions, workshops, and talks, traces the cultural currents that have flowed through the land of Hashirimizu while opening a place for people to encounter the land, engage in dialogue, and envision the future. Participating artists: OMaki Shinji, Kataoka Junya + Iwatake Rie, Chacha, Yasurao, Mitobe Haruna, Lucas Leglise, and Haraguchi Noriyuki.
