Summary
The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo will present "Tate Museum: Turner Exhibition — The Sublime Painting, Dialogue with Contemporary Art" from October 24, 2026 to February 21, 2027. The exhibition features over 80 oil and watercolor paintings from the Tate's collection, showcasing the work of J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851), Britain's leading landscape painter. It traces his career from early to late periods, exploring themes such as moonlight, eclipses, British landscapes, the Alps, history painting, Venice, and seascapes, with the concept of the "sublime" as a central axis. Contemporary artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Richard Long, Katie Paterson, and Mark Rothko are also included, creating a dialogue across time on shared concerns of nature, climate, light, and color. Admission is 2,400 yen for general visitors.
