Art Jakarta 2026 Report: The Current State of an Art Fair Connecting the Multilayered Ecosystem of an Archipelagic Nation
Summary
Art Jakarta 2026, a leading Southeast Asian art fair, was held from October 2 to 4, 2026, at JIExpo Kemayoran in Jakarta, drawing 41,646 visitors, a 4.3% increase from the previous year. Fair director Tom Tandio noted that Jakarta's art scene is steadily growing, with new galleries opening and alternative spaces and studios increasing, shifting the perception of Jakarta from merely a market hub to a place where artistic creation can be seen. The main GALLERY section featured 75 galleries from Indonesia and abroad, with over half from Indonesia and 33 from overseas (19 first-time exhibitors), mostly from major Asian cities including Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, and Tokyo. Tandio explained that maintaining 75 galleries provides a good balance for full presentations, emphasizing diversity and quality of content over sheer scale. Gajah Gallery's Aisha Amrin noted a notable increase in young collectors. ROH presented a two-person exhibition by Bagus Pandega and Kei Imazu titled "Wet" at its Jakarta space during the fair, while Stasa Gallery showed large works over 4 meters wide, indicating collectors with ample space. Japanese galleries included AKIO NAGASAWA GALLERY, DDD ART+SCENA., Miaki Gallery, MISAKO & ROSEN, Whitestone Gallery, YOD Gallery, and YUMEKOUBOU GALLERY. Ota Fine Arts senior director Yoriko Tsuruta observed strong attendance and sales, noting the warm community spirit of nurturing artists as characteristic of Jakarta's market. GALLERY SCENA. director Midori Tanaka highlighted the market's momentum, with royalty and wealthy collectors buying in bulk and community-driven purchasing trends.
