Sneaker Brand OAO Holds Craft Exhibition in Kyoto, Exploring the "Sixth Sense" Through Ceramic Artist Takashi Tanimoto's Works
Summary
Tokyo- and Kyoto-based sneaker brand OAO will hold the exhibition "OAO® ARTS & CRAFTS EXPERIENCE" at Ochill Kyoto on November 8–9. This marks the first installment of a new project that explores new forms of culture and creativity through collaborations with various artists, rooted in Japanese and global culture, art, and craft. Under the theme "ROKU," the exhibition overlaps five elements—vessels, water, light, space, and stillness—with the five senses of sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing, exploring the "sixth sense" that emerges beyond them. The centerpiece is a collaboration with ceramic artist Takashi Tanimoto, based in Iga, Mie Prefecture. Born in 1978, Tanimoto is the third generation of a ceramic family, following his grandfather Mitsuo Tanimoto and father Kei Tanimoto. He creates tea bowls, flower vases, sake vessels, and objects using Iga clay, finding beauty in the asymmetrical forms, firing-induced scorches, and complex clay textures of old Iga ware, and reinterpreting traditional aesthetics with a contemporary sensibility. The venue will display a large jar and flat plates created for "OAO HAUS KYOTO." The jar will be permanently exhibited at OAO HAUS KYOTO after the exhibition, and the plates will be available for order.
