Next-generation design event "alter. 2026, Tokyo" to be held at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall. 75 creators from Japan and abroad will exhibit products.
Summary
"alter. 2026, Tokyo" is a design event in which next-generation creators form cross-industry teams to explore new values in product design through prototyping and collaboration. It will be held for four days from October 29 to November 1 at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall. Now in its second year, the event will feature 75 creators from Japan and abroad, centered on projects selected through judging by an international committee of five members: Paris-based artistic director Dan Sorey, UK designer Faye Toogood, Vitra Design Museum curator Johan Durel, architect and Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art director Jun Aoki, and Milan-based journalist Laura May Todd. Exhibitors span not only product designers but also artists, architects, photographers, artisans, engineers, and researchers. Unlike typical trade-show formats, exhibition fees are free and production subsidies of up to 3 million yen are provided depending on scale. Rather than lining up individual booths, the event evaluates products, exhibition spaces, and visitor experiences as an integrated installation, composing the entire venue as a single exhibition.
