BTS RM's Personal Collection Comes Together at SFMOMA in San Francisco, USA: "RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me" Report
Summary
The exhibition "RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me," showcasing works collected over about a decade by BTS leader RM (Kim Namjoon), opened on October 3 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and runs until February 7, 2027. This marks the first time RM has publicly presented his collection at a museum under his own name. RM co-curated the exhibition with SFMOMA's Amanda Castillo and Hyoun Kim, presenting about 200 works centered on modern and contemporary Korean art alongside pieces from SFMOMA's collection. Throughout the venue, RM's handwritten text appears on signage, wall texts, and floor notes, and English and Korean audio guides feature RM explaining in his own words why he loves particular works and what drew him to them. Rather than asserting his knowledge or taste, the exhibition shares personally why he loves art and what art means to him, true to its title "Between You and Me." In the audio guide, RM notes that while music persists as electricity and frequencies and sounds different depending on the playback device, a painting exists before you as "that single painting itself"—something he envied. He says he makes music because words alone cannot convey everything, and that this exhibition is similar, adding that visitors should simply enjoy it and can stop the audio guide if they feel bored and just look at the works. The exhibition avoids presenting RM's interpretation as the "correct answer," instead sharing generously why he loves art and what attracts him to works while leaving room for viewers to engage with the art freely.
