The exhibition "Min'gei SHOCK!! - Kawai Kanjiro of the Seikado after 60 Years since his Death" has opened at the Seikado Bunko Art Museum in Marunouchi, Tokyo, running until November 8. Marking 60 years since the death of the Taisho/Showa-era ceramicist Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966) and approximately 100 years since the birth of the "Min'gei" (folk craft) movement, the show presents all 51 of the museum's Kawai works from his pivotal "middle period" (c. 1924-37) together for the first time. It also displays inspirations for his art, including Chinese antiquities, Joseon dynasty "Yi Dynasty" ceramics, British slipware, and Japanese folk kiln wares. The four-chapter exhibition explores Kawai's early influences from Chinese celadon, the transformative impact of encountering slipware in 1924, and the development of his philosophy alongside Yanagi Soetsu and Hamada Shoji, demonstrating how he absorbed techniques and aesthetics from various folk arts into his own style.
