[Tokyo] Exhibition of Vertical Typesetting in Hangeul
Summary
The exhibition "Exhibition of Vertical Typesetting in Hangeul" will be held at Book&Design in Asakusa. Hangeul was written vertically for about 500 years after its creation, but horizontal writing spread around 1900 with Western culture, and in 1945 textbooks were typeset horizontally as a policy, leading to the disappearance of vertical writing from Korean society after 50 years. The low efficiency was a major reason, but economic growth and social stability around 2000 increased cultural inclusiveness, setting the stage for the revival of vertical writing. This exhibition anticipates the future of vertical Hangeul and introduces various typefaces and layouts of vertical typesetting. Exhibitors and speakers include Lee Yong-jae and Park Ji-hoon, with related forums and lectures scheduled from September 20 to 23.
