National Museums to Raise Admission Fees for Collection Exhibitions

The Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art announced that it will revise admission fees for collection exhibitions and screenings at six facilities: the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the National Crafts Museum; the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; the National Film Archive of Japan; the National Museum of Western Art; and the National Museum of Art, Osaka. The new fees will be applied sequentially from exhibition periods beginning in or after October 2026. For example, the general admission fee for collection exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and the National Museum of Western Art will increase from 500 yen to 1,000 yen. The National Crafts Museum's fee will rise from 300 yen to 1,000 yen, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka's from 430 yen to 1,000 yen. At the National Film Archive of Japan, the fee will increase from 250 yen to 500 yen, and its collection film screenings from 520 yen to 1,000 yen. The museum cited the need for investment to enhance exhibitions and screenings, improve digital access and accessibility, and address rising costs for transportation, security, and installation due to inflation and higher energy prices. Free admission will continue for high school students and younger, those under 18, those 65 and older, and persons with disability certificates plus one accompanying caregiver.
