The 5th Floor, an alternative art space focused on curatorial programming, has launched applications for "Pre-Curatorial 2026," the third edition of its experimental educational program for young curators. Applications close on October 2, and the program runs for five days from October 30 to November 3, 2026, at The 5th Floor in Taito-ku, Tokyo. The theme of this edition is "Practice Gestures," focusing on the conceptual construction of curatorial practice and how to balance it with on-the-ground realities. The program consists of five components: lectures by domestic and international independent curators (with interpretation for English-language lectures), post-lecture group discussions, team-based group work, visits to artists and art spaces, and a newly added roundtable dialogue with external guests. Approximately five participants will be selected regardless of nationality, gender, age, or personal/group affiliation, targeting students of curating and early-career professionals. The program is conducted primarily in Japanese, requiring adequate conversational ability. Selection is based on future potential rather than past achievements. One participant from outside the Tokyo area may receive travel and accommodation subsidies. Results will be announced via email in mid-October. The program is supported by Taguchi Art Collection, with cooperation from Hanazono Alley, OFFICE HORIE LLC, and Room101.
