The Fukuda Art Museum in Arashiyama, Kyoto, will hold the exhibition "Timeless Code Contemporary⇔Edo" from January 30 to June 6, 2027, featuring about 70 works that transcend time by juxtaposing Edo-period paintings with contemporary art. Since opening in 2019, the museum has focused on early modern and modern Japanese painting, began collecting contemporary art in 2023, and in November 2025 installed sculptures by Yoshitomo Nara and Izumi Kato in its garden, presenting the diverse transformations of Japanese art. This exhibition continues that effort by comparing globally acclaimed contemporary artists with Edo-period masters to reveal shared expressive structures and spirituality beyond eras and social frameworks. It comprises four chapters: Chapter 1, "Inner Form," contrasts Yoshitomo Nara with Ike no Taiga and Nagasawa Rosetsu; Chapter 2, "Yayoi Kusama⇔Ito Jakuchu," examines vitality through repetition and attention to detail; Chapter 3, "Izumi Kato⇔Edo," juxtaposes Kato with the Zen paintings of Hakuin Ekaku; and Chapter 4, "Two Resonating Worlds," presents the harmony within the differing techniques of Yu Nishimura and Rei Imai. Through about 70 works, including four premieres, the exhibition offers a new viewing experience in which artists separated by roughly 200 years resonate with one another.
