A major exhibition on "pictures within pictures" to hold its first Japan showing at the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo in 2027; Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna's collection coming to Japan
Summary
The large-scale exhibition "Pictures within Pictures: The Adventure of Images. From the Renaissance to the Modern Era and Beyond" will be held at the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo, from September 18, 2027 to January 16, 2028, marking its first showing in Japan. The theme of "pictures within pictures"—paintings depicted within paintings—has long been an important subject in European art, where painters embedded special meanings and devices by depicting other worlds within their canvases. The exhibition was made possible through the full cooperation of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, whose holdings include the Habsburg collection. Masterworks spanning from the Renaissance to the modern era will be shown alongside works from other world-class museums such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The exhibition traces how Western painters have conceptualized "painting" and "seeing" over the centuries. No touring of the exhibition is planned.
